Work description
HUANYING is a sound installation of welcome in Standard Chinese, presented simultaneously at four sites for the duration of the exhibition: Zagreb Airport, the central bus and railway stations—key terminals connecting the city to the world—and at the entrance to the Technical Museum, the main exhibition venue of the 49th Zagreb Salon. Discreet speakers at all four locations repeat, in a set rhythm, the greeting in Mandarin: “Welcome to the 49th Zagreb Salon of Applied Arts and Design.” The multi-site placement underscores openness and interconnection, while China is invoked as a paradigm of the new economic and cultural centers of global power around which our present and future increasingly organize. The work, therefore, offers both a welcome and a subtle critique of that trend.

Nenad Laktašić (b.1967, Zagreb) graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb. Works as sound installations artist, scenographer and animator on animated films.
